Yesterday Renee and I were fortunate enough to be invited to the Port Coquitlam chapter of Taking Off Pounds Sensibly (TOPS) to talk to their members about fitness, exercise, and nutrition. TOPS is a non-profit organization that promotes healthy and realistic weight loss, and provides a strong support network for like-minded individuals who are looking to live a healthier lifestyle. The TOPS members meet weekly, and take turns researching and sharing information regarding exercise and nutrition with one another in order to help each other reach their goals.

I arrived a bit early for the meeting, so I waited outside to meet Renee and allow the TOPS members to complete their weekly weigh-ins. While standing outside, I began to hear a series of very enthusiastic rounds of applause, which turned out to be the membership congratulating those who had “taken off pounds sensibly” in the past week. The moment I heard this applause and the support that the membership provides for each other, I knew this was going to be a very rewarding experience.

As the talk began, I was pleased that it wasn’t a typical lecture-style setup; the TOPS members invited us to sit within their circle, where we then had a very relaxed discussion about weight loss and nutrition. This is exactly the setup I would have preferred, as it parallels the EB philosophy and what we try to achieve. Even though we are professionals, our desire is not to preach in a condescending manner or make a sales pitch to make business. Rather, we are merely using our expertise and passing on information as equals so that the members have the tools to reach their goals by themselves.

The discussion turned out to be fantastic, as Renee and I answered all the questions that were presented to us. The members concluded the session by endearingly holding hands in a circle while reciting their TOPS creed. All in all, it was a very rewarding experience for myself, and it was great to be able to reach out into the community further and help to promote healthy living.
